Scammer gets woman to pay $1,500 over the phone

Phone scam

A scammer swindled a Bay Parkway woman out of more than $1,500 over the phone on April 29 by pretending to be with the Social Security Administration and local police force.

The woman, who lives at Cropsey Avenue, told police that the perp called her at around 1 p.m. and asked her to send the money, which she did via Google Play gift cards.

Car jack gone wrong

Police arrested a man who allegedly tried to steal a woman’s car on Kings Highway on April 30.

The alleged attempted theft occurred between W. Sixth and W. Seventh streets at around 3:45 p.m., police said. The man allegedly leaned over the woman in the driver’s seat and grabbed her keys and the steering wheel before telling her “give me your car, I want your car,” according to the report, which added that the man allegedly fled when the woman began to scream and cry.

Cash grab

A thief stole $580 and a laptop from a woman in the lobby of a Bay Parkway building on April 30.

The theft occurred at the building at 84th Street at around 4:10 p.m., police said.

Stroller swipe

A pilferer stole $160 and a woman’s credit and insurance cards from her wallet that she left on top of a baby stroller while shopping at an 86th Street store on May 1.

The theft occurred at the store at Bay 19th Street at around 12:15 p.m., according to the report.

Would-be purse snatcher

A baddie tried to steal a woman’s purse on 67th Street on May 2.

The attempted theft occurred between between 18th and 19th avenues at around 9:30 a.m., according to the report, which added that the punk drove up behind her on a black dirt bike and tried to grab her bag, causing her to fall to the ground and hurt her right hand and right ribs, police said.

Evening smoke

A lout broke into a 71st Street shed and stole a copper pipe on May 3.

The break-in and burglary occurred on the block between 21st Avenue and Bay Parkway at around 6 p.m., according to the report, which added that the crook broke the lock on the shed in order to gain entry.

Purse snatcher

A crook stole a woman’s purse with $1,300 and her identification card inside from an 86th Street restaurant on May 4.

The theft occurred form the eatery at 24th Avenue at around 1 p.m., police said.
