St. John’s Bread & Life, Brooklyn’s largest soup kitchen with an array of social service programs, is seeking volunteers for the summer months. Specifically needed are Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, Polish and Russian translators who are fluent in one of those languages and English to help guests apply for social service programs. Other volunteers are being sought for data entry.
The months of June, July and August see a drop in interns who volunteer at St. John’s Bread & Life while they are pursuing degrees in social work and human resources, so there is a great shortage during that time.
Other requirements for volunteers include the following:
• For data entry, volunteers are needed to support the soup kitchen, the digital food pantry, social services, medical and legal advocacy and support groups for men and women. SBJL is a paperless organization so computer skills are very helpful as is previous experience at a human service organization.
• For foreign language services, volunteers work independently with clients to determine their needs, to help them fill out forms and work with caseworkers. Previous social service experience and computer literacy is helpful.
Required hours are half days, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 12:30−4 p.m., or full days.
