Six men, one woman, one cellphone

Gang of six

Police arrested six men, ranging from 16–26 years old, for stealing a cellphone from a woman on the subway at the Bergen Street station on Aug. 18.

One member of the sextet snagged the victim’s iPhone on 10:40 pm in the station beneath Smith Street while they exited the train. Police later charged the gang with a similar mugging at the Fourth Avenue subway station days earlier on Aug. 13.

Cane and disable

Police are searching for a scoundrel who split another man’s head with the victim’s own walking cane near the corner of Columbia and Degraw streets on Aug. 17.

The violent attack erupted after a confrontation between the two acquaintances over a $10 debt owed to the victim, 49, by the 35-year-old ruffian at 5:15 pm.

At some point, the debtor seized his lender’s bamboo cane and hit him in the cranium with it, causing a laceration and sending the victim to Long Island College Hospital for treatment.

Stalk in the park

A purse-snatcher exploited a mother’s attention to her child in a park on Hicks Street to steal her pocketbook on Aug. 4.

The victim, 29, told police she momentarily left her bag to tend to her child in Voorhees Park at Congress Street at 5 pm. When she returned to her perch, her bag, containing her driver’s license and banking and credit cards, was gone.

Swimmer’s gear

A thief broke into a man’s car near the corner of Ferris and Coffey streets on Aug. 6 while the victim was swimming blocks away in the Red Hook public pool.

The police report did not indicate how the crook intruded into the 1996 Ford Explorer. The swimmer told police the villain took a camera, $300, a car radio, an iPod and a watch.
