Brooklyn-Queens Expressway traffic will be snarled for the next few weeks as the city resurfaces the cantilevered section of the highway below the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.
The city will start milling and repaving the road tonight at 10 pm and the work will narrow the Williamsburg-bound side to one lane from 10 pm–5 am Monday through Saturday, according to the state transportation department.
The work is expected to last about two weeks and crews already completed a similar resurfacing in the opposite direction, a transportation department rep said.
The new asphalt might be like putting lipstick on a pig that is about to be roasted as the 60-year-old cantilevered roadway fails to meet federal highway standards and has already outlasted its planned lifespan. The stretch of highway is suspended over Brooklyn Bridge Park and carries more than 160,000 cars per day — many more than it was originally intended to. The transportation department under Gov. Cuomo killed a plan to carry out a top-to-bottom overhaul of the highway in 2011, saying it would be too pricey.
