A walk to work by big−hearted Brooklynites translated into big bucks for disadvantaged youngsters hoping to attend camp this summer when the St. Nicholas Neighborhood Preservation Corp. held its annual St. Nick’s benefit walk in Williamsburg.
More than 150 staff and supporters of the non−profit group left their cars and MetroCards at home and pounded the pavement to the organization’s office, 11 Catherine Street, where they joined fundraising forces with like−minded benefactors to raise money for vacation camps operated by St. Nick’s Youth & Education and the School Settlement Association.
Neighborhood residents did their bit by meeting at Cooper Park, Olive and Sharon streets, for the sponsored jaunt, whose organizers hope to raise $60,000. At press time, the group had raised $20,000, said a spokesperson.
The camps, all in North Brooklyn, run from July through late August at the Williamsburg Beacon Center, the Greenpoint Beacon Center, Public Schools 18 and 19, and at the School Settlement Association.
Neighborhood Preservation Corp. was established in 1975 at the forefront of a nationwide grassroots movement to preserve and improve threatened urban areas.
