New York’s first Haitian-American assemblywoman is officially in office.
Newly elected Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte was sworn in as of the 42nd Assembly District representative during a ceremony hosted by Mayor DeBlasio on Jan. 18.
Bichotte replaces longtime incumbent Rhoda Jacobs, who had represented her Flatbush-to-Midwood district since 1978 before stepping down at the end of her 18th Assembly term.
Bichotte won the seat by beating fellow democrat Rickie Tulloch, who had the backing of Jacobs, in the primary back in September. Bichotte was backed by DeBlasio, Public Advocate Letitia James, and the Working Families Party. Bichotte then swept the general election, taking in 82 percent of the vote.
