Hunter College students and other local volunteers finished out Red Cross Month with a rebuilding project in Canarsie on March 29.

The Red Cross organized the volunteer day with six partner organizations, including Rebuilding Together NYC, to rebuild homes damaged by superstorm Sandy.

The volunteers worked on an apartment that was ruined by the storm surge from Jamaica Bay — hanging insulation, painting, taping and redoing flooring. It was hard work, but satisfying, according to the volunteers.

“I try to do this type of work as much as I can,” said Farwa Ilyas, a student volunteer from Hunter College who lives in Midwood.

She said it was her way to repay her good fortune after being spared the chaos Sandy visited upon so many people she knows.

“I wasn’t affected much by the storm but my friends were affected and other people that I know” said Ilyas “This was a very gratifying experience and I’m giving back to the community where I spent my whole life.”
