The next Ice Age has hit Williamsburg.

Sometime last week, an unknown substance started dripping out of the back of the former Union Ice ice cream shop, according to a commentator on the website Reddit. Whatever it is has since covered the entire alley behind the storefront on Union Avenue at the corner of Grand Street in several inches of ice.

The ice cream shop apparently opened for one summer in 2010 and shuttered once the warm weather ended, never to reopen. Neighbors we spoke to were not aware of the creeping frozen carapace overtaking their backyard, but the freaky covering could melt away this weekend, when temperatures are expected to hit 50 degrees.

The owners of the building could not be reached for comment.

Reasonable discourse

SwampYankee from runined Brooklyn says:
Yup, I remember the Union Ice Cream shop. Another hipster business that lasted a few months. These rubes came to Williamsburg to teach us poor locals what REAL ice cream should taste like. IIRC there was mojito but the real big flavor they were pushing was Earl Grey Tea flavored ice cream. LIKE YAHHHHHHHHH! Like I said, it lasted a few months but it was the KEWWLEST shop in the nabe!!! Another shiney hipster thing that captured someones attention for 3 months and emptied someones bank account forever.

ty from pps says:
You're so pathetic. Should we make a list of all of the "real Brooklyn" restaurants and other similar businesses that have gone out of business in short order? Hmmm?

(btw, almost all 'gourmet' ice cream companies offer some sort of tea flavor... whether it's black tea or green tea. Just because you don't like it, it doesn't mean other don't. I have a feeling your don't have an interest in a lot of things other people like.)

Ty........It's been a while but it seems I still have to remind you that you are only allowed to use the word "pathetic" in your posts 15 times a day. Once again, you have exceeded your limit. So, lets tally up all the "real Brooklyn" Restaurants that have been housed in shipping containers (like the Union Ice Company) and have closed.......and the number is!!!! Turns out no " Real Brooklyn" restaurants are in shipping containers! Only hipster businesses are in shipping containers. Thousands of those have closed! The whole DeKalb market was hipster shipping container business and they all closed! LIKE YAHHHHHHHHHH! LETS OPEN A BUSINESS IN A SHIPPING CONTAINER!!!!! IT IS BOTH ZANY & QUIRKY! LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEE!! PLEASE MOMMY LOOK AT ME!!!! I HAVE A BUSINESS IN A SHIPPING CONTAINER!! I AM GOING TO TEACH REAL NEW YORKERS ABOUT ICE CREAM! LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEE!. Yeah, look at me fail at business

Jaz -- You simple minded buffoon... Well, done taking a statement about ice cream flavors, in general, and making it about the success of a particular ice cream store! I know reading is probably not one of your top skills, but you should try a little harder.

"Interloper" from Kent Ave says:
Swampy and Jaz are just pissed that the guy who started up the Union Ice Cream shop made more money with a failing business in a few months than they have in their entire career at the local post office.
