The city wants to reverse the direction of traffic for the block of Bond Street between Livingston and Schermerhorn streets — and residents can weigh in on the plan tonight when the Department of Transportation reveals its full proposal to Community Board 2’s transportation committee.
The goal is to connect up the DeKalb Avenue bike lane with the one on Schermerhorn Street, according to district manager Rob Perris.
Currently, cyclists riding Cobble Hill-bound off Dekalb Avenue have to get to Schermerhorn Street by taking their life in their hands for several terrifying blocks along Flatbush Avenue Extension.
The quieter Bond Street flows directly off Dekalb Avenue and crosses Schermerhorn Street, but riders hit “Do not enter” signs a block beforehand at Livingston Street, where the one-way traffic reverses direction, becoming Downtown-bound.
The transportation department’s plan is to switch that last block around, enabling riders to cruise the rest of the way.
The agency also wants to add more bike lanes to Dekalb Avenue and Bond Street, and will give more details on that tonight.
Also at the meeting, transit reps will present their proposal to legalize an illicit but popular shortcut for cyclists riding between Amity and Dean streets.
The plan went before Community Board 6’s transportation committee in December, and the majority of the panel’s members supported it, but they delayed voting on the item until they hear more from Cobble Hill residents.
