Holding posters that said “Equal Rights Now” and “Love Makes a Family,” more than a dozen members of Revolution Church NYC held a vigil for local residents to speak up for equal rights in the LGBT community last week.
With a soapbox positioned behind the McCarren Park Field House (Lorimer Street between Bedford and Driggs avenues), both gay and straight individuals took turns reading poems, telling autobiographical stories, and offering advice to their peers.
“It’s time for me to step up to the plate,” said Mayra David, one of the organizers for the event. “I’m straight and I’m for equal rights for everybody.”
Joey Baker, pastor of Revolution Church NYC, emceed the event, as many people shared stories about their experience being both gay and religious in New York City as well as explaining to their parents who they were growing up.
“I wish more people had parents who don’t tell their children who to hate and what to love,” Chris Ammons said.
