At the mid–way point of the season, Brooklyn’s kickball powerhouses are hitting their stride.
The 2010 champions, the John Cougar Mellencamps, decontaminated Space Rabies, 10–0, while shearing Zeus’ Beard, 7–2, behind the spectacular play of Brook “Shaking Hands with The” Bishop, Andy “Sharkweek” Lin, and pitchers Kristen “All Butter” Baker and Lindsey “Maintenance Man” deMaintenon.
And last year’s top–ranked team, Brooklyn United, scored 20 runs en route to two 10–0 landslide wins over Kickball Fever and the Kickey Mouse Club.
But the United could face its greatest challenge yet, after star infielder and captain Justin “Thomas” Taylor dislocated his shoulder for the second time this year.
“Justin is playing catcher and he’s working on throwing lefty,” said United’s “Hey” Kate Brown. “A new injury to watch!”
Other veteran teams picked up big wins this weekend, including the Bacon Bits, which fried up the Kickiables, 8–1, and the Mathletes, which multiplied the Sugar Tits!, 11–1, before dividing up the Kickey Mouse Club, 5–3.
“We won even with some bobbling in the field and none of our players bled or got unnecessarily dirty in either game, which is a first in the history of the Mathletes,” said captain Kiley “Calculus” Edgley.
And Hot Mess is back on the winning track with two wins over Space Rabies and Saved by the Balls, ceding only three runs the entire night.
But captain Randall “Nilhaus” Mixon lamented the team’s lack of energy in both wins and promised to do better next week.
“Typically we go in with high spirits and yesterday was no different in that respect, but we always leave satisfied with our effort and gamesmanship,” said Mixon. “I’m sorry to say that we failed in both those goals. “Maybe we got lazy, satisfied, negligent — it’s hard to say.”
Other teams tried to relish the small victories.
Dolls Kicking Balls left the weekend with a split, and Rev. Ann Kansfield’s rookie team, Living on a Prayer, split two, subjugating themselves to Recession Aggression, 4–6, while tamping Kickball Fever, 9–6.
