Hey there, Brooklyn babies, and welcome to the very first weekend of 2012. Maybe you’re pledging to lose a few pounds this year, eat healthier, tell those in your life that you love them more often, or make more time for yourself (if you work at, say, a newspaper, you can forget that last one altogether). But why not start the year off right, with a goal that’s much easier to achieve — like have an extremely killer weekend? Lucky for you, we’re here to help. Brooklyn: welcome to your first weekend of the new year; make it count!
• Start your Friday evening off right, with a trip to the PowerHouse Arena for the grand opening of the “Feast Your Eyes” photography exhibit, a group show that explores the different ways we experience the food we eat. Check it out, mingle with the artists, and work up an apetite — there’s plenty to eat in Brooklyn, after all.
• After the show, take refuge from the freezing cold in the laid-back, California-inspired Bay Ridge taco joint, Ho’bra, which serves up delish margeritas in frosted mason jars, and makes a mean veggie taco.
• Top off your Friday with a little theater — go see “Snow White.” No, it’s not the sleepy fairy tale you’re used to. We’re talking about the Bond Street Theatre’s rendition of the classic, which features acrobatics, circus, dance, theater and opera.
• Then, head to Fort Greene and cool yourself off with a smooth cocktail at brand new drink spot, Dick and Jane’s.
• Want a hot, fresh hamburger at the trendiest place in town? On Satruday, go get on line at Downtown’s brand spankin’ new Shake Shack on the Fulton Mall. The “Fudge-eddaboutit” concrete comes highly recommended — after all, it’s chock full of Mast Brothers chocolate and smothered in specialty chocolate-cinnamon sauce!
• Spend the rest of your Saturday learning all about Brooklyn’s maritime history at the brand spankin’ new Navy Yard museum! Who wouldn’t wanna?
• Why stop there, when you could hop over to the Brooklyn Museum and check out the —highly controversial — show, “Hide/Seek,” that features a piece of art so racy it was banned from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. It’s cool — Brooklyn can handle it. Our very own Butcher of Flatbush Ave. Extension loved it; we think you will, too.
• On Saturday night, warm up with a performance of the Heights Players’ “Enchanted April,” the story of four women who escape to to an Italian castle for a whole month. You can’t do that, but you can spend an hour at the theater!
• On Sunday, spend the afternoon strolling amidst the rustling grasses of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, on a guided tour designed to ward off the winter doldrums.
• Afterwards, treat yourself to a cocktail and a clam sandwich at the Slope’s newest pub, Sea Witch, to wind down a pretty perfect weekend.
