What, no leftovers?

Bay Ridgites got a free “pre-Thanksgiving” meal courtesy of The Brooklyn Market on Nov. 20. Supermarket staff cooked up a Turkey Day dinner so big it would make your grandmother blush, and it was quality, too, one patron said.

“Usually if you get a free meal, you get a hot dog or something, but they spared no expense,” said Don Barron.

The feast included candied yams, ham, potatoes, green beans, carrots, bread, and 40 turkeys in total. They had no trouble giving it away, according to the supermarket’s general manager.

“We fed around 250 to 300 people, and we were out there for about four hours,” said manager Victor Santos. “We invited customers and anyone that was walking by that wanted to join us.”

The market’s owners took over the store at the corner of Third Avenue and 81st Street in July 2014. The pre-Thanksgiving meal was the first such event they held, but not the last, Santos said.

“This was the first time we’ve had the opportunity to do something like this,” he said. “We hope to continue doing it in the future on special occasions. We’re happy we were able to assist the community.”
