A gunman shot three men dead Downtown in the early hours of Sunday morning, police said.
Police responded to reports of shots fired on Fleet Walk near Prince Street at around 1:47 am on Sept. 20, where they found 43-year-old Queens resident Calvin Clinkscales suffering gunshot wounds in the head and torso, 39-year-old Downtown man Lacount Simmons with bullet wounds in his back and torso, and 76-year-old Downtown resident Herbert Brown suffering from a gunshot wound in his abdomen, police said.
Emergency responders declared Clinkscales and Simmons dead at the scene, and took Brown to Methodist Hospital, where he later died from his wounds.
Authorities believe the shooter hit Simmons and Brown, who both live nearby, as they were attempting to flee, according to a police spokesman.
In the wake of the shooting, Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo (D–Fort Greene) called on community members and city officials to do more to combat gun violence, including fighting for stronger anti-gun trafficking laws and making sure kids have access to community centers, which she said steer young people away from a life of crime.
“In recent weeks, gun violence and loss of life has become the new narrative throughout communities of color across this city,” she said in a statement. “When guns are more accessible then community centers and youth programming, we must change course.”
Police have released footage of a guy who they believe is the gunman.
