Too much smut

To The Editor:

I’m a retired senior citizen, born, raised and aged in New York City. I’m not religious, nor am I a prude, but menacing changes are occurring.

Our country has degenerated and sunk into a shameful, moral depravity. All who have worked diligently, and those killed fighting for this nation, are being dishonored. The computer and television are two of the major influential contaminants.

The Jerry Springer show and the audience it attracts is a prime example of moral pollution. It’s interesting to note the kind of advertisers who support this form of show. There was a time when radio and television writers would create a variety of highly-entertaining programs without the use of obscene displays, encouraged fighting and foul language.

I believe that the (FCC) Federal Communication Commission, in Washington, DC, has the authority and responsibility to oversee television programs (except for cable programs) for improper broadcasting. So why aren’t they doing their job?

Taking it a step further, with the huge volume of adults and children watching cable, why are the moral restrictions not applied to those programs.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Family life is disappearing. In these days of recession, heading towards depression, an abundant number of parents have second jobs to survive the economic crisis. Increasing amounts of affluent women, seeking recognition, influence and power, vie for top level jobs. Mothers who choose to work and those who must work, unwittingly, leave their children to make bad decisions.

The children lack advisement and parental supervision, motivating an increase in drug and alcohol use and resulting in the rise of teenage unplanned pregnancies.

On a recent Dr. Phil TV show, the mother of a twelve-year-old boy, presented the problem of a twelve-year-old girl, smitten with her son, volunteering to perform oral sex. Where does the responsibility lie for the shocking knowledge and projected actions of this pre-teenage female child?

I believe that the President Bush war, fuelled by his administration and advisers, have lied, mislead and falsified information to justify the billions of dollars spent and given away. In part, a direct cause and result of our gigantic debt in our plummeting economy.

The last segment of doom has to be the upcoming presidential election. I don’t believe that either candidate will pull us out of the depths of hell, placed us there by the Bush administration. I further believe that most politicians in Washington are lying, dishonest, earthlings, who when given the right incentives will do, or say, anything and vote for whatever, or whomever, will offer the most or best acceptable means of personal compensation.

McCain, with 100 years of experience, probably knows every political trick in the book. But, if elected, will align himself with all his old buddies to continue business as usual. The rich will get richer.

Obama, with his limited experience, will get little, if anything, through a hostile congress, but if elected, will try his best, and probably wind up on a psychiatrist’s couch.

Our best chance to restore solvency and bring back some pride and prosperity, would be to replace congress and look forward to a Kennedy type president in year 2012.

For those of you who will still be around – good luck.
