The Sheepshead-Nostrand Houses was awash with blood and the smell of gun smoke Sunday morning after three people were shot — two fatally — following a violent early-morning altercation.
Police were still looking for the person responsible for gunning down 22-year-old Crystal Sweet and 29-year-old Timothy Walter on May 29. A third man, Walter’s older brother Cornelius, was shot and remained in critical condition Tuesday.
Sweet, a mother of a five-year-old who friends said was expecting her second child, was shot in the head and neck and died at the scene.
Walter, who police said had been linked to two murders, as well as several drug offenses, was also shot and killed.
Cops say they found crack cocaine on Walter’s body, leading investigators to believe that the shooting may have had something to do with drugs, according to the New York Post.
Witnesses said bullets started flying on a patch of grass inside the complex near the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Avenue X at 5:35 am. Sweet’s relatives, who raced to the scene after hearing the news, couldn’t contain their grief as they watched members of the city’s medical examiners office took away the young woman’s body.
“I wanted to run and say, ‘Crystal, Crystal, I’m there for you!’ ” Sweets mother Josephine Rodriguez told reporters at the scene. “I couldn’t tell her I loved her. I couldn’t say goodbye.”
The trio were returning home from a party when they were shot at. Sweets doesn’t live at the Sheepshead/Nostrand Houses, but Walter did, neighbors said.
