Assemblyman William Colton is lauding the Department of Transportation (DOT) on its investigation and conclusion that Avenue W between Van Sicklin and West Sixth streets should become a two-way street.
The Gravesend/Bensonhurst legislator has long been receiving complaints from constituents of the area, citing that the eastbound one-way street didn’t conform to the adjacent two-way streets and has been a troublesome traffic spot for decades. Colton sent letters to Department of Traffic’s Borough Commissioner Joseph Palmieri requesting a traffic survey.
Earlier this year, DOT Commissioner Palmieri responded, stating: “We conducted an investigation of this proposal, which included but was not limited to street measurements, an inventory of all parking regulations, on-street parking usage and traffic circulation.”
The DOT Commissioner concluded, “Based upon the information obtained from this investigation…Avenue W will operate more efficiently as a two-way street. This proposed conversion will also improve traffic circulation in the area.”
Colton says that this one block has irritated residents for decades. “Some motorists are even going the wrong way up the one way street, either by mistake or defiance. It is most gratifying when a city agency agrees with the resident’s complaints and plans to correct the situation.”
Colton applaud Palmieri and his staff “for their proposal to make the needed change.”
