As part of a larger initiative to bring Starrett City residents closer together, and bridge the gaps between the various cultures, religions, and age groups in the community, the UJA-Federation of New York sponsored a free Unity Festival, organized by the Jewish Community Council of Canarsie.
Featuring amusement rides, face painting, balloons, musical entertainment, and refreshments for all, the American Museum of Natural History also sent one of its Moveable Museums for kids and families to explore cultures from around the world.
Avrohom Hecht, executive director of the JCC of Canarsie, said, “It was heartening to see how people from all walks of life came together to make this event the true success that it was. We feel it is important that we continue working together with our community partners in conveying respect for our neighbors.”
State Senator John Sampson was also in attendance.
Community stakeholders who have expressed support for this initiative include Congressman Ed Towns; State Senator John Sampson, Office of the 40th Assembly District; Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz; Councilman Charles Barron, Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office; the NYPD 75th Precinct, Community Board 5; Christian Cultural Center; Congregation B’nai Israel; Be’er Hagolah Institutes; the Starrett Tenants Association; Spring Creek Partners; North Shore Bottling Company; JADD Enterprises, Inc., and several concerned community activists.
