Gone in six seconds

A lot of things can happen in six seconds: you can sneeze, beat the Rubik’s Cube world record, or watch an incredibly clever Vine video. If the latter appeals to you, check out the Vine Film Festival, which celebrates petite feats of filmmaking. The event will show loops of Vine entries on multiple projections and the very best six-second bits will win awards at the end of the night. If have a minuscule masterpiece you would like to enter, just tweet your Vine video with the hashtag #tinylittlevideos and show up to the event.

Food fight

Jerry McBride

Watch contestants get crafty with kale at Brooklyn Winery “CSA Smackdown.” The Iron chef-like cooking competition will (peach) pit members of Just Food Network CSAs against each other in a test of speed, skill, and stress management as they act like straight up Samurais with squash, snap peas, or whatever secret, farm-grown ingredients are available in their CSA shares. Winners will get a chance to move on and contend in a city-wide finals event and you, as an audience member, will finally figure out how the hell to cook celery root.

Great booze places

In 1900, Henry James published a short story called “The Great Good Place” about a character who dreamt of escaping to a place where he could recuperate from the grind of every day life. Many of us feel the same way, and often flee to our favorite dive where everyone knows our name. Inspired by this notion, artist John Tebeau set out to create an art piece called “Great Good Places of Brooklyn,” in which he sought out six Kings county taverns that encouraged a sense of community with good bartenders, vibes, tunes, and drink specials. One of Tebeau’s finalists includes the very cool Fort Defiance in Red Hook where he will be unveiling silk screened renderings with a party that will include free appetizers, live music c/o the three-piece blues act Stevie from St. Lou, and giving $10 from each art sale to the Red Hook Initiative.
