Councilman David Yassky (D-Brooklyn Heights) took a break from campaigning for city comptroller and took over the foursquare court at Saturday’s “Williamsburg Walks” event.
Yassky took on all comers, and observers said he exhibited a unique skill at Williamburg’s beloved sport.
“It may not qualify him for comptroller, but he certainly moved the ball around with a vigor seldom seen in a politician,” one witness quipped.
Of course, it isn’t the first time that the policy wonk has made news for his skills at an arcane game.
As an adolescent, Yassky’s skill at bridge was actually the subject of a 1982 story in the New York Times, a Manhattan newspaper, which described his style of play as embodying “the ebullience of youth.”
He’ll need more than ebullience to defeat all three council colleagues — John Liu, Melinda Katz and Mark Weprin — in the Sept. 15 primary.
Fans of foursquare — which some sportsmen call boxball or smackball — will have another chance to play the schoolyard game at “Williamsburg Walks” on Saturday on Bedford Avenue between N. Seventh and N. Eighth streets from 2 to 5 pm.
