A ‘Fare’ to remember

While Brooklyn was busy racking up acclaim in the Zagat Guide, Brooklyn Fare earned the borough another gold star — or two, actually, in the latest edition of the highly regarded Michelin Guide.

The Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare — a prix-fixe supper club located in the prep kitchen next to Schermerhorn Street grocery store — is the first Brooklyn eatery to hold two stars or more. We’re also betting it’s the first grocery store to earn any Michelin rating at all.

“To be the first person to get two Michelin stars in Brooklyn is really great. I’m very humbled by that,” said Brooklyn Fare owner Moe Issa. “Initially, I just wanted to build a good prep kitchen for the store, and thought why not put a good chef in there? I never intended to open a Michelin-starred restaurant.”

The restaurant, which has a months-long waiting list, has quickly become one of the hottest dining experiences in town. Issa has said that more guests come from out of town to try chef César Ramirez’s ambitious cuisine than people from around the neighborhood.

“I’m not really surprised, because the food is so good,” said Issa. “But we thought we would get maybe one star. It’s very casual. The chef cooks in front of you. You even bring your own wine.”
