Most Rev. Bishop Frank J. Caggiano led the congregation from local parishes through the mostly Catholic neighborhood on the most solemn day of the Christian calendar, marking Christ’s crucifixion.
Parishioners stepped off the line of march at Edward B. Shallow High School on 66th Street, between 15th and 16th avenues, traveling to 65th Street and 18th Avenue, and onto 75th Street where the group turned on 15 Avenue before continuing the procession along 86th Street to St. Frances Cabrini Church for culminating rites.
The crucifixes represented the Stations of the Cross, reminding believers of Jesus’ journey from the trial before Pontius Pilate to Calvary, the site of his crucifixion.
The participating churches were: St. Athanasius, St. Bernadette, St. Dominic, St. Finbar, St. Frances Cabrini, St. Mary Mother of Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Rosalia-Regina Pacis and Saints Simon and Jude.
