These days, most people are pinching pennies, but those in the know are marching their piggy banks straight to Ellis Bar in South Slope, where it’s pennies for pints.
Keep your hangover cure on hand — every Friday just one American cent will buy you a pint or a shot during chaotic half-hour periods throughout the night (also karaoke night, by the way).
That’s not to mention the bar’s 25-cent Bourbon Thursdays and free midnight tacos on Saturdays.
Co-owner Seth Ellis, who runs Ellis bar with his wife and father, says the idea was inspired by the college bar he frequented in Arizona, where the penny beers flowed until the first person had to pee.
The idea is, naturally, a hit. “It’s our busiest night by far,” said Ellis.
Crown Heights resident Thomas Van Stockum, 23, said he frequently ventures to South Slope for the deal, noting that, “Penny beers are a cheap night out … and definitely taste better than actual pennies.”
Also noteworthy: the bar’s simple Southwest-inspired bar menu (dreamed up by Ellis himself, a trained chef), featuring grub like red pepper jam and goat cheese, homemade meatloaf and chipotle chicken club.
