The Art of Brooklyn Film Festival is all about celebrating films that are either made by Brooklynites, set in Brooklyn, or filmed in Brooklyn. But here at The Brooklyn Paper, we are always looking to push the parochial envelope even further, so we have plucked out three of the Brooklyniest if this year’s bunch.
Bittersweet
“Kara Walker: A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby” is a documentary short about artist Kara Walker’s installation of a giant sugar sphinx in Williamsburg’s doomed Domino Sugar Factory that was the talk of New York art scene — and all over your Instagram feed — last summer. The film illuminates the ideas behind the project plus offers a up-close look at the construction of the mammoth statue.

Fast forward
“Delivery Hour” follows the travails of a Red Hook cocaine dealer juggling a wife about to give birth, a girlfriend about to leave him, and a drug sale that goes south quickly, all while trying to win enough money on a Nets game to move his family out of the projects. Sound stressful? The film was also shot in one continuous take, so the adrenaline never stops as the pusher cruises around town trying to keep his life together.

“Jazzsoon: Portrait of a Brooklyn Hustler” profiles a curious real-life Brooklynite who goes by the name “Jazzsoon,” lives in his grandparent’s Park Slope apartment, and makes a living collecting and selling retro comics and clothing. Director Ivan Cash inadvertently made Jazzsoon a viral internet meme when he featured him in a previous project declaring, “You gotta live your life on the weekends. Steak and shrimp on the weekends!” Now Cash gets to know more about his life and philosophies.
