The Fourth Annual
Park Slope Old-time Bluegrass Jamboree will be held Sept. 28
and 29 at the century-old Ethical Culture Meeting House in Park
Slope. The jamboree kicks off The Good Coffeehouse’s fall music
season.
The jamboree is a traditional American music festival featuring
workshops in playing traditional American string-band music (fiddle,
banjo and guitar) and concerts by noted old-time and bluegrass
performers.
James Reams & The Barnstormers (left to right, Mark Farrell
on fiddle and mandolin, Mickey Maguire on banjo, James Reams
on vocals and guitar and Carl Hayano on stand-up bass) kick off
the festivities with a concert on Friday at 8 pm. Their most
recent CD, "Barnstormin’" (Copper Creek Records, $15)
was released in May. Admission to the show is $10.
On Saturday, the activities run 12:30 pm to 10:15 pm. That’s
the day of the annual presentation of the "Brown Jug Award"
to a person who has made a significant contribution to old-time
or bluegrass music in the Northeast. From 12:30 to 2:30 pm workshops,
such as "care and feeding of acoustic fretted instruments"
by Bob Jones, will be offered; from 2:30 to 6:15 pm musicians
can participate in a jam/song swap; and from 6:15 to 10:15 pm
there will a barbecue and performances by various old-time and
bluegrass performers.
For a complete schedule of events, go to www.bsec.org. Saturday’s
admission is $2.
