Call it good clean fun.
Members of a Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens business improvement district took to the nabes’ streets on June 24 for a day of sidewalk beautification that showcased how the organization’s services invite commerce to its communities, according to a spokeswoman.
“The goal was to show how this can lead to a more vibrant, cleaner, and greener environment for businesses to thrive in,” said Saloni Sharma.
The day-long “BID a Better Block” event organized by the Court-Smith Business Improvement District, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and Councilman Brad Lander (D–Cobble Hill) gussied up area pavement by sending sweepers to dust off swaths of Court and Smith streets between Pacific Place and Hamilton Avenue and through ‘greenification’ activities that included planting trees and clearing old foliage along the thoroughfares.
“These activities make the neighborhood more visually appealing and inviting,” Sharma said. “Which, we think, will attract more business for the community overall.”
A truck from Brooklyn-based creamery Van Leeuwen parked on Smith Street near Baltic Street to scoop out free ice cream during the event for passing locals, who applauded the work the business improvement district does to better their nabes.
“I think what they’re trying to do is great” said Cobble Hill resident Carlee Berger Ogren. “Business improvement districts provide amenities for already great neighborhoods.”
