It was a mouthful!
Forty-seven food and drink vendors gathered in Bushwick on June 13 for an annual foodie street fair fund-raiser, offering guests a digestible culinary tour of the neighborhood that otherwise would be hard to swallow in a single sitting, according to organizers.
“Bushwick has an exciting culinary scene,” said Sue Kessler, who organized the event. “The biggest appeal is that everyone gets to experience all of these places that they’ve heard about, but could not possibly visit in one night. This was a way to do that.”
Newcomers Big Gay Ice Cream, Supercrown Coffee Roasters, and craft beer bar Bierwax joined returning vendors that included Taqueria Los Tres Hermanos and the Cajun-inspired Tchoup Shop at “Taste of Bushwick,” which took place on a private thoroughfare inside cold cut king Boar’s Head’s distribution plant on Bogart St. near Flushing Ave.
The food fest expanded for its fourth installment, organizers said, adding a second tent to host attendees and offering a preview hour for those who simply could not wait to get their grub on.
The money from the event will fund local theater, The Bushwick Starr, where Kessler is the executive director.
But the cash is an added benefit of the party, which organizers said is primarily an opportunity to build camaraderie in the community.
“People getting to meet each other and getting to know each other has always been an important aspect to us,” Kessler said. “We really put thought into an event that would give people a really comprehensive taste of everyone in the neighborhood.”
