Center shows it’s the ‘Salt’ of the Earth

The Salt Marsh Nature Center went all out for Earth Day this year, hosting arts and crafts, a nature walk and a performance by the Brooklyn Dance Center on April 23.

Performers from the W. Sixth Street organization, which holds classes for toe-tappers of all ages, delighted the crowd with dances based on “A Midsummer Nights Dream.” This Shakespearean comedy is set in the forest, so it was a perfect choice for an Earth Day party.

In addition to adorning fairy costumes for a Shakespeare-inspired performances, dancers shook their hips to beats from all over the world. Belly dancers wiggled to Middle Eastern music, while performer Roman “Redhawk” Perez bedazzled the crowd with a Native American Earth blessing.

And it wouldn’t be Earth Day without some good deeds, so most attendees of the afternoon’s event donated to The Red Cross, which is running relief efforts in Japan.
