Coney Island felt the “Power of Love,” did you?
Borough President Markowitz called and Huey Lewis answered, coming down to Coney Island with his band, the News, on Thursday — in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the hit album, “Sports,” in the second-to-last concert before the end of this year’s series of Seaside Summer Concerts.
The Beep heralded the band on stage, joined by mayoral candidates Christine Quinn and John Lui.
But the real show started with the same song that opened the band’s 1983 album, “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” along with the tune’s opening lines, an ode to the greatest city on Earth.
“New York, New York, is everything they say and no place that I’d rather be,” Lewis belted before a crowd of more than 5,000 New Yorkers.
Huey Lewis and the News then beat out the remainder of the number-one album, before mixing things up with “While We’re Young,” “Trouble in Paradise,” and “Some Kind of Wonderful,” closing out the set.
But the crowd wasn’t having any of that, and after a few minutes of rousing applause, the band returned with what everyone had been waiting for, especially the anonymous drunken man who screamed, “Back to the Future!”
That’s right, Brooklyn wasn’t letting Lewis leave without playing at least one of the band’s contributions to the classic comedy adventure, and the band obliged, with the “Power of Love.”
