Cops are investigating the mystery of a decomposing body found by the Coney Island boardwalk on Tuesday.

A construction worker discovered the remains at a construction site near W. Fifth Street at 2:38 p.m. on Aug. 6, and investigators arrived to discover the corpse of a man in an advanced stage of decomposition, cops said.

“The body was characterized as considerably decomposed,” a police spokesman said.

Coney Island resident Florence Yorrie said she saw police activity around the construction site as she was leaving the beach Tuesday afternoon.

Yorrie explained that officers surrounded the construction site by New York Aquarium, where workers had torn down a wall that blocks off an old, unused walkway to the beach under the boardwalk. She suspects that the workers found the body in the closed-off pathway.

“People used to use that space,” she said, while noting the path has been blocked off for many years.

The latest grisly find isn’t the first body found at the People’s Playground this summer. In June, a swimmer came across a severed lower leg in the waters off New York Aquarium, and later, police scuba divers recovered other appendages stuck in rocks at roughly the same location, both in close proximity to Tuesday’s grisly discovery.

The Chief Medical Examiner has not yet determined cause of death for the decomposing body.

Cops say that the investigation remains ongoing.
