Driver fatally strikes Bath Beach man crossing street a block from his home

A driver hit and killed an 87-year-old Bath Beach man who was crossing the street just a block from his home on Sept. 27.

The motorist struck Carmine Bruzzese just after 2:45 pm near the intersection of 86th Street and 21st Avenue, police said. Bruzzese was crossing 86th Street in the crosswalk from the side closer to 85th Street to the side closer to Benson Avenue just after the light turned green when the driver smashed into him with his truck, according to authorities.

Police said that Bruzzese sustained trauma to his head and body and was unconscious and unresponsive when officials arrived, adding that the motorist remained at the scene.

Paramedics rushed Bruzzese to NYU Langone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The police department’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident.
