The state says the Franklin D. Roosevelt HS in Bensonhurst is one of the worst high schools in the city.
But what determines the quality of a school.
It depends on who you ask.
According Michelle Perez, a social studies teacher at FDR, despite the school’s bad numbers, students do graduate — it just takes them a little longer.
“Somewhere between 43 and 47 percent of our kids are English as a Second Language students,” she said. “ They need extra time to graduate. So instead of taking four years, they graduate in six.”
And parents say that some go on to great things.
“It’s not because they aren’t intelligent kids,” Elizabeth Rook, who’s son is a freshman at the school. “A lot of these kids end up with scholarships to Ivy League schools.”
