The ’20s
As we head into 2020, go back to 1920, with a speakeasy-themed New Year’s Eve Party at the Coney Island Brewery. The seaside beer barons will turn their taproom into a speakeasy, featuring a raucous jazz band and sideshow acts. Your ticket will get you four drink tickets and some late-night bites — and outside, there will be fireworks at midnight!
8 pm–2 am at Coney Island Brewery [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 16th Street in Coney Island, (718) 996–0019, www.coneyislandbeer.com]. $40.

Water way
Thousands of people believe that the best way to brace yourself for the coming year is to jump into the freezing waters of the Atlantic, at the New Year’s Day Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge! Personally, I think the best way to enjoy the event is by staying warm and dry, while admiring the many outfits of those going into the water, but if you want take the plunge, show up between 10 am and noon to sign up.
1 pm at Coney Island Beach (sign up at Stillwell Avenue at the Boardwalk in Coney Island, polarbearclub.org). $20 suggested donation.

The Brooklyn institution features plenty of up-and-coming comics performing alongside well-established comedians, including Josh Gondelman, Shalewa Sharpe, and Shane Torres, among many others.
