It was a day to say thanks to those who deserve it most.

Veterans gathered at Fort Hamilton for the annual Retiree Appreciation Day on Oct. 28 to learn more about applying for Social Security and disability benefits, among other topics. The day presented an opportunity to both gain access to resources, as well as to connect with old friends, according to one attendee.

“It was like a family reunion,” said retired Col. Annette Tucker Osborne, who retired in 2013 after 30 years as an Army nurse and is currently the president of the Brooklyn chapter of the National Association of Black Military Women. “Once you get out and you’re no longer in the unit, you tend not to see a lot of people.”

Other speakers and organizations offered fitness classes, financial advice, health screenings, and information on transitioning back into civilian life.
