Happy Unicorn Day!
Yes, finally we have a day to proclaim our love of the magical one-horned steed, best known for curing poison wounds and posing for rainbow Lisa Frank posters. April 9 is National Unicorn Day in Scotland, which makes it International Unicorn Day here in the Borough of Kings. In addition to joining the “Unicorn Rescue Society” release party with Adam Gidwitz on April 7, Brooklynites who love the mythical, magical beasts can celebrate them at several spots around town:
Toot your own horn!
If you need to blend in with a herd of unicorns, you need your own rainbow-colored, sparkly spiral horn! Fortunately, Park Slope has a store dedicated to just that: Brooklyn Owl, which sells unicorn horns of all colors and sizes. This Sunday and Monday, the unicorn horn peddlers at Brooklyn Owl will celebrate Unicorn Day(s) with a small celebration, featuring a prize wheel game and some cool giveaways. The store is also planning is first anniversary celebration on May 6, which will feature a live unicorn and goody bags.

Drink up
Get a mouthful of colorful stars with a sip of the Unicorn Latte, a warming, bright blue beverage from the End cafe in Williamsburg. The drink with multi-colored foam is made with ginger, lemon, blue-green algae, vanilla bean, and other purportedly healthy ingredients, and it will carry you away to a magical land — or at least to Instagram, where it is a real hit.

Carroll Gardens bookstore Books are Magic will throw an early Unicorn Day event on April 8, featuring two readings related to the enchanting equines! Author Kamilla Benko will read from her middle grade novel “The Unicorn Quest,” about a girl searching for her sister in a magical land, while author and illustrator Jessie Sima shows off her picture book “Not Quite Narwhal,” about a unicorn raised under the sea by narwhals. After the readings, kids and their parents can take part in a unicorn-related arts and crafts session.
