Known for its ostentatious pageantry, sparkly purple and gold beads, and ebullient brass ensembles, Mardis Gras is coming to Williamsburg in a way more befitting of Bedford Avenue than Bourbon Street.
On February 16, L Magazine will combine forces with the Brooklyn Bowl to throw the only Mardis Gras party worth going to in Brooklyn. Well, in Williamsburg anyway.
Wavves will be playing a free show at the Brooklyn Bowl (61 Wythe Ave.), joining MNDR, in what is expected to be a highly anticipated performance featuring the former rhythm section of Jay Reatard joining Wavves’ frontman Nathan Williams.
The highlight of the night, however, is the parade, which L Magazine’s Lauren Beck described as “a Brooklynized Mardi Gras affair featuring a marching band, burlesque dancers (including a float with Angie Pontani, Helen Pontani, Darlinda Just Darlinda, Akynos, the Maine Attraction and Lil Miss Lixx), beads galore, and the strong possibility of confetti.”
Stop by the parade first, where your best Nawlins costumes are encouraged, at 7 p.m. at McCarren Park (North 12th Street and Driggs Avenue). The parade will snake its way down Driggs, up Bedford and back to Wythe Avenue before settling in for the night at Brooklyn Bowl.
