There’s no disguising a fun time.
More than 100 people covered their faces and opened their wallets at a masquerade ball benefitting the youth-mentoring program Coney Island Generation Gap at Rex Manor Catering Hall in Dyker Heights on Dec. 4. While the adults played, young members of the organization were busy raising money for a spring trip, the group’s director said.
“We had all our youth there as the paparazzi filming and taking photos,” said director Pamela Harris.
Coney Island Generation Gap raised $6,500 toward an April cruise that will whisk 20 kids and Harris through Jamaica, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands. But the holiday won’t just be a lark — Harris is turning the trek into one big educational scavenger hunt, she said.
“They have a lot of questions they’re going to have to answer — math, geology, geography — we don’t just take them on trips and let them eat bon bons,” Harris said.
Guests at Monday’s masquerade were treated to food and fun, with a photo booth and raffles to raise money for the youth group.
The organization also honored community leaders, including hero Brian Gotlieb, who broke several toes and took 13 stitches stopping an out-of-control soap box derby car at the Generation Gap’s annual downhill race in August.
