To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Plant Powered Metro New York is stepping up to host four simultaneous “Health Freedom Walks” across the Big Apple on Monday.
Combining history with hearty plant-based bites, these walks will mirror a restaurant crawl, leading participants through Bed-Stuy, Harlem, Mott Haven and Corona. Along the way, organizers of the health-focused nonprofit will connect them with locally owned eateries while celebrating both cultural milestones and Dr. King’s enduring vision.
The walks will wind through streets, plazas and venues named for King, leading to three or four restaurants in each neighborhood. At each stop, chefs collaborating with PPMNY will serve nutritious, plant-based dishes that highlight the rich culinary traditions of the African diaspora. Some routes will also include walk marshals who share historical context and inspiring commentary.

Organizers say the event, like the group’s mission, is inspired by King’s legacy of building community, and his vision of equality and empowerment.
“I host the Health Freedom Walk because the serious nature of our life-saving work in food and nutrition requires community and joy,” said PPMNY Partnerships Manager Rebecca Johnson.
Founded in 2019, PPMNY empowers communities to improve health through plant-based nutrition. By promoting dietary changes to prevent and reverse chronic disease, the organization connects New Yorkers with the tools, education, and support needed to achieve lasting wellness and equity.

Bed-Stuy has long been a center of civil rights activism in Brooklyn. Its historic streets have witnessed decades of marches for justice, with landmarks such as Marcus Garvey Memorial Park and the Billie Holiday Theatre standing as powerful symbols of the ongoing fight for equality.
Stops there on Monday will include Uptown Veg, offering Caribbean and Southern-inspired plant-based dishes; Natural Blend, serving fresh smoothies and vegan fare; and September BK, known for its globally inspired, locally sourced plant-based meals.

In Harlem, participants will visit OurtBox Cafe, Uptown Veg, Field Trip, and Ginjan Café, while in Mott Haven, they’ll stop at Rosa’s at Park, 787 Coffee, and Maisonetta, and the Corona walk will feature Juice Garden, Just Made 4 U, and Dosa Delight.
Those interested can register for a Health Freedom Walk through PPMNY’s website with a small donation, and meet up will take place at historic locations in each borough. In Brooklyn, walkers will meet at the Billie Holiday Theatre at Restoration Plaza.
