The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy offers a wide array of family fun events during summer 2008.
The Conservancy’s most popular event returns for its ninth year. Movies With A View is one of the city’s premiere outdoor film series with an eclectic line-up of films and breathtaking views of the NYC waterfront. Each feature is preceded by a short film. DJs from Brooklyn Radio kick off the evening, spinning tunes as the sun sets, and the restaurant RICE sells delicious dinners onsite. Bike valet is provided by Transportation Alternatives.
The series runs Thursdays, now to August 28 from 6-11 p.m. on the lawn of the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park section of Brooklyn Bridge Park. August 7 brings Pleasantville; August 14, Cabaret; August 21, Being There and August 28, The Shining.
On August 15 and 22, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Cove in Brooklyn Bridge Park, join Audubon New York educators on a walk through the park and learn how to use binoculars to spot birds, and how to identify some common birds that make New York City their home.
Binoculars and bird checklists will be provided. Space is available for 30 kids plus their parents or guardians. To reserve a place, call 718-802-0603 extension 18 or email kgilmour@bbpc.net.
This summer, local boating groups and boathouses from around the Harbor offer free kayaking and community rowing at ‘the Cove between the bridges’ in Brooklyn Bridge Park. There is no need to sign-up in advance; boating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring clothes you don’t mind getting wet, and shoes or sandals suitable for walking on a rocky beach.
No training or prior experience is needed. The only requirement is that you know how to swim. All equipment is provided free. Kayaking and canoeing will be inside a protected cove. Rowing will be in a group rowboat with an experienced guide. Children under 18 must have an adult guardian present.
The dates are August 2 and 16 and September 14, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; August 9 and 24 from 2-6 p.m. and September 6 from 1-5 p.m. in the Cove in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
