One-hit wonderful! Donna Lewis to play Southpaw

The singer-songwriter behind the most memorable pop hit of her generation will play an intimate, acoustic performance at Southpaw on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Donna Lewis, the Welsh rarebit who conquered the charts in 1996 with the smash, “I Love You Always Forever,” is the marquee name on this week’s installment of the “Acoustically Related” concert series.

“It’s going to be really stripped down — just piano and vocals,” the siren said by phone from her Woodstock roost.

Lewis said she’s tinkered with the melody of her certified-gold success, which would’ve been Number 1 on the charts were it not for a little ditty called the “Macarena.”

“I do it in a highly different way, because the chorus was such a nursery-school rhyme,” she said.

We won’t hear such talk. To us, “I Love You Always Forever” will always forever be the summer of ’96 driving down to the Jersey shore with a girlfriend who always wanted to play chick music. Lewis’s song was the only one we didn’t want to fast forward. And it’s true to this day. There, we said it.

Donna Lewis, Sunday, Feb. 22 at Southpaw [125 Fifth Ave., between Sterling and St. Johns places, (718) 230-0236], 7 pm. Tickets, $10.
