Over 60? Get help staying in shape – ‘Senior Fitness’ program includes tennis, yoga, walking

City Parks Foundation welcomes all New Yorkers, ages 60 and over, to sign up for the Spring 2008 Season of “CityParks Seniors Fitness,” a free program that runs April 28-June 20, offering tennis lessons, yoga instruction, and fitness walking in nine parks across New York City, including Marine and John J Carty parks in Brooklyn.

CityParks Seniors Fitness is now in its third year and many past participants are excited about re-enrolling for the spring season.

Brooklyn resident Leonard Mendez enrolled last year in the tennis program at Marine Park and is looking forward to getting back on the court this year.

“Very few of us in the community can afford professional tennis instruction, so we love this program. It allows us to get out into the community to mingle and meet other people from different areas,” said Mendez.

All equipment and instructions will be offered free of charge and all activities take place twice a week at each location. To maximize health benefits, participants are encouraged to register for two or more weekly activities and maintain regular attendance.

From 2003 through 2005, City Park Foundation’s (CPF) Tennis Program for Seniors provided six weeks of free lessons at all skill levels each autumn.

Due to the continued success of this program, CPF launched CityParks Seniors Fitness in 2006, offering the program in both the fall and spring. The program began in three parks in 2006 and expanded to nine parks in 2008.

This program is supported by Zwicker Electric; Scott Stringer, Manhattan borough president; Martin J. Golden, NYS senator, 22nd District; Michael R. Bloomberg, mayor, City of New York and the New York City Council under the leadership of Christine C. Quinn.
