A man died after a driver hit him while he crossed a Williamsburg street, police said.
The motorist behind the wheel of a 2015 Ford pickup truck was driving on Maspeth Avenue towards Varick Avenue around 5 pm on Friday, when he made a left onto Vandervoort Avenue and plowed into 51-year-old Jose Rubi as he crossed Maspeth Avenue, according to authorities, who said the deceased crossed the street “mid-block.” But a Police Department spokesman could not immediately specify whether “mid-block” meant the victim was outside of a crosswalk at the time of the crash.
Cops also couldn’t immediately say which direction Rubi was crossing the street when the 46-year-old driver, who stayed at the scene, struck him.
Paramedics rushed the victim, who lived about a mile away on Union Avenue, to Woodhull Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, officials said.
The city’s medical examiner on Sunday determined Rubi died from injuries to his head and torso sustained in the crash, according to cops, who on Tuesday said they’ve yet to arrest anyone, and that their investigation is ongoing.
