The developer of a controversial building at the corner of Second Place and Smith Street revealed this rendering, showing how his project will reconfigure the adjoining and much-beloved plaza.

Billy Stein’s plans to build a seven-story condo tower at 360 Smith St. has been hounded by some critics. Not the least of their concerns was what would happen to the court, which they equate with a little sliver of Paris in Brooklyn.

Stein’s design show there will be a 20-foot covered path to the subway entrance, because his building will project over what is now open space. He described its benefit to The Brooklyn Paper as “a protected area to stand in inclement weather,” though his fiercest opponents may not be assuaged by that silver lining. — Mike McLaughlin
