They’re back on the block!
The Red Hook Initiative (RHI) celebrated the newly−inked lease on its new hub of operations with a benefit celebration in the empty warehouse it hopes will become a “fully−functional community center for years to come.”
The ‘Back on the Block Party’ featured RHI’s community advocacy and outreach work, showcased local young talent, plus helped visitors learn about plans to refurbish the vacant space at 767 Hicks Street, a move spearheaded by the non−profit organization and its staff of volunteers from the Red Hook Houses, who sold raffle tickets, food, t−shirts and buttons to try and raise $5,000 toward the cost of the $350,000 renovation.
Residents of Red Hook Houses have been making donations to the project since RHI lost its space in November 2008, operating instead from a temporary office in the area, and through churches, schools and other local sites.
The group hopes move into its new facility by September.
