Oh Danny boy, the pubs, the pubs are calling!
It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and nowhere is hotter than Bay Ridge, but follow our guide and the wind will always be at your back.
Gambol over to Harp Bar (7710 Third Ave. between 77th and 78th streets) on Friday to catch a wee bit of Piranha Brothers’ Gary Gilroy’s set at 7 pm. Keep your sips long and the good-byes short, because you’re going to want to rush down to The Wicked Monk (9510 Third Ave. between 95th and 96th streets) faster than a snake fleeing the Emerald Isle to catch Celtic rockers The Canny Brothers’ 10:30 pm set.
On Sunday, seek asylum at the Irish Haven (5721 Fourth Ave. between 57th and 58th streets), where Belfast native Sean Sands is giving a special acoustic performance at 8 pm. Sands’ brother Bobby was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, a British parliamentarian, and the first prisoner to die in the 1981 Irish Hunger Strike. Here at Bay Ridge Nights, we typically don’t send folks north of 65th Street, but there is literally nothing more appropriate you can do for St. Patrick’s Week than going to this show.
Tuesday is the big day, and we’ve got a real three-fer, because singer Martin McQuade is performing a set of St. Paddy’s songs at aptly hued Greenhouse Cafe (7717 Third Ave. between 77th and 78th streets). Backing him up will be veteran ivory tickler Pete Sokolow.
