‘Santa’ Bloomberg brings Christmas Cheer to seniors

Some of Brooklyn’s most venerable residents who gathered at the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Center Christmas morning shared their holiday with a very special guest: Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Ridgewood Bushwick’s annual Christmas meal is a tradition stretching back 38 years. Nearly 200 volunteers, some of whom arrived at the center at 5:30 a.m., prepared and served 2,500 meals for homebound seniors throughout North Brooklyn, including 450 seniors who ate a delicious meal of manicotti, salad and chocolate eclairs.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the mayor and the Commissioner of Aging, Lilliam Barrios-Paoli,” said Assemblymember Vito Lopez (D-Williamsburg), who founded Ridgewood Bushwick (located at 319 Stanhope St.). “We want to thank you, Mayor Bloomberg, for being supportive. It’s a tradition.”

Though he did not bear gifts, Mayor Bloomberg thanked the seniors in attendance and wished them good health and a better year in 2010. He also promised to call his mother.
