Shop Brooklyn: consumers urged to keep it local

Shop local, folks – every time!

Brooklyn’s growing reputation as a cultural and shopping mecca received a home-grown boost when Borough President Marty Markowitz and Brooklyn Tourism launched a “Shop Brooklyn” awareness campaign in Fort Greene to re-introduce cash-strapped shoppers to the borough’s unique neighborhoods and thriving commercial corridors with promotional events, advertising and consumer incentives through December 25.

Markowitz was joined by representatives of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, local business improvement districts, merchants groups and local development corporations as he made the announcement at the corner of Fulton and South Portland Avenue, quipping, “When you ‘Shop Brooklyn,’ you take a global shopping tour.”

Among the attendees were officials from the Fulton Area Business (FAB) Alliance, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, Greenlight Book Store and Pratt Area Community Council.

Shop Brooklyn’s spectrum of enticements champions Brooklyn’s local, small businesses and utilizes a “Brooklyn Bonus” to lure shoppers to make their purchases with area merchants.

Participating stores sign up and agree to offer a Brooklyn Bonus on any day(s) of the week during the special shopping season. The bonus can be a major discount, offering, a free item or a special experience.
