Stopping traffic!

A traffic light has finally been installed near Fontbonne Hall Academy after years of begging and pleading with the city to do so, and students and faculty at the all-girls school couldn’t be happier.

The long-awaited traffic signal will be installed by next March at 99th Street and Shore Road by the city’s Department of Transportation.

“The students cheered when I told them,” said Sister Dolores Crepeau, the principal of the 520-student school.

“There are so many girls crossing, and the cars come so quickly,” Crepeau said. “There are always drivers who don’t follow the rules, but it’s just going to make it so much safer.”

No students have been killed crossing Shore Road by the school, but several have been hit over the years.

The curving thoroughfare is a notorious speedway, said Rosa Casella, whose daughter graduated from Fontbonne last June, because there are no traffic controls between 91st Street and Third Avenue.

“When my daughter took the bus there,” she added, “I didn’t want to know, are you in school? I wanted to know, did you cross the street?”
