Want to catch the hot new revival of “A Streetcar Named Desire”? You just missed it.
The entire 24-day run of Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Liv Ullmann–directed production of the Tennessee Williams classic — starring Cate Blanchett — is sold out.
Plenty of theatergoers are sure to be disappointed given that Blanchett’s performance as the tormented Blanche DuBois has won near-universal praise since the show premiered in Sydney in September.
Williams won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for “Streetcar” — which tells the tale of kindness-relying DuBois, a Southern belle whose brother-in-law, an urban immigrant named Stanley Kowalski, forces her to confront the radical changes taking place south of the Mason-Dixon line in the early the 20th century.
The production, scheduled to run from Nov. 27 through Dec. 20, also had a run in Washington, DC that had critics going ga-ga for Blanchett.
“If Cate Blanchett’s nerve-shattering turn as Blanche DuBois doesn’t knock the wind out of you, then there is nothing on a stage that can blow you away,” the Washington Post, a popular newspaper, gushed.
Ullmann, known for her own stellar, cerebral performances in such film classics as “Scenes From a Marriage” and “A Bridge Too Far,” has been lauded for creating an atmospheric setting that captures the turmoil of the South in decline.
From the start of the production, Blanchett said she was excited to be appearing in an Australian version of an American classic. “It will be exhilarating to tour a classic American play, as seen through our eyes, back to an American audience,” she said.
The show marks a homecoming of sorts for Blanchett, who made her stage debut at BAM in 2006 with a performance in “Hedda Gabler.”
