Meet Sunset Park’s newest Chinese immigrant.
Beijing’s Chaoyang District is donating a special arch to Sunset Park’s Little Fuzhou — America’s fourth largest Chinatown and the largest in New York City (take that, Manhattan).
“Beautifying our streets doesn’t mean just adding more green,” said Borough President Markowitz as he unveiled the planned paifang at his final state of the borough address last Thursday.
Markowitz said in his address that the street-crossing architecture — dubbed the “Friendship Archway” — was the success of Paul Mak, the president of the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association, and Winnie Greco, Borough Hall’s Chinese liaison.
A rendering of the arch shows the design spanning Eighth Avenue between 64th and 65th streets. The proposed arch will have nine roofs and four pillars, as is frequently used in imperial Beijing structures, according to the Beep’s press office.
Markowitz is still working out the details with City Hall and Assemblyman Peter Abbate (D–Borough Park), he said.
A spokesman for the Beep said that he couldn’t add any additional information at this time.
